T5

For any LED, fluorescent or incandescent bulb, “T” stands for tubular, describing the bulb. The number following the T is the diameter of the tube in eighths of an inch. At just under an inch in diameter, the T5 is the smallest of LED tube lights, but offers a variety of power consumption options, from four watts up to 15 watts. They can also vary in LED quantity, from 90pcs to 240pcs — the higher the pcs count, the brighter the bulb.These LED bulbs are ideal for smaller fixtures, such as battery-operated lamps, and are available in several different lengths.

T8

T8 bulbs are commonly found in commercial buildings, such as offices and schools. These bulbs are smaller than a T10, and save more energy. Since these bulbs are larger than a T5, they require more wattage, ranging from eight watts up to 35 watts. These bulbs are ideal for moderately sized work or living areas with few light fixtures or larger commercial areas.

T10

Among the largest of LED tube lamps, the T10 bulb measures 1 1/2” in diameter. The T10 bulbs require about the same wattage as the T8 bulbs, ranging from eight watts to 35 watts. The quantity of LED remains the same for these bulbs as well, from 130 pcs up to 600 pcs. These bulbs may be appropriate for older light fixtures, which usually require larger bulbs. Both the T10 and the T8 are ideal for commercial areas with a need for bright lights. As with all LED tube bulbs, the T10 can be ordered in lengths from two to eight feet to accommodate any size fixture. By comparing your existing fluorescent bulbs to LED tube light options, you can easily determine which LED bulb will best suit your needs.

How to Use Solar Lighting for a Garden Area

Solar lighting can make a simple garden space look like a professional landscape designer created it. Available in a variety of styles, colors and finishes, solar lights can highlight a garden’s special nook or spotlight specific flowers and shrubs. As the price of solar lighting fixtures comes down, look at your garden and yard for ways to use solar lights as accent pieces. Be creative with their placement. Remember, the only thing they need to function is plenty of sunshine.

Instructions

1.Plan your garden lighting. Either design lighting for your entire landscape, or focus on one garden area. Decide what you want to showcase. It’s best to use fewer lights and space them less than 10 feet apart for best results. Because the lights put out small quantities of lumens, spacing them too far apart causes them to lose their visual appeal.

2 .Experiment with your lighting plan. Place flashlights where you would like to set the solar lights. Move them around to get the look you want. Hold the flashlight at different heights and angles to get different effects. Taller lights radiate over a larger area than shorter ones. Some lights have removable tops that allow the light to shine upward. These are good for accenting walls and hedges. Spotlights have rotating heads to focus on specific landscape markers. You can stay with the same finish or type, but varied fixtures add different lighting effects.

4 .Install the lights. Remember to remove any protective covering over the rechargeable batteries. Depending on the amount of sunshine, it may take a day or so for the batteries to reach full charge. Adjust the lights as necessary to get the best effect.

Tips & Warnings

For best results, place the solar lights so they get at least eight hours of sunlight daily. Any amount less than that may affect how long they remain lit at night.

Place solar lights away from areas where a lawn mower or string trimmer might damage them. While solar lights in general don’t put out enough light to bother the neighbors, an incorrectly placed solar spotlight might. Be sure to put solar spotlights where they can’t shine directly in anyone’s eyes.

Standards of LED Street Lights

LED street lights are environmentally friendly, reduce costs and save energy. They produce a directional, high level of light which creates visibility without glare. There are no specific standards for measuring, testing or applying LED lights.

Energy Efficient

LED street lights often replace standard street lights because they’re energy efficient which reduces energy costs. According to Pacific Gas and Electric’s Street Light Program, customers who use LED lights for street fixtures can change to a lower billing rate.

New Standard

LED street lights are the new standard for replacing high pressure sodium heads (as of 2011). The electronic LED systems can be dimmed or brightened to different light levels. There are a lot of possibilities for these new systems to control the amount of lighting according to the needs of the area being lit.

Pattern Standards

Pattern standards are set by the Illuminating Engineering Society to help prevent light from being wasted. New advancements in LED light technology have lowered the amount of LED lights in a street lamp fixture. This results in meeting roadway pattern specifications.

How to Replace a LED Light Bulb

The great thing about LED light bulbs is that normally there are many of them all gathered together. This means that when a bulb burns out, you will still be able to use whatever it is you are using without a huge difference in light quantity or quality. That said however, you may find yourself in a situation where you really want or need to replace a LED light bulb. There are some things that you can do about this, but it will vary greatly depending on the location and type of bulb you are attempting to replace.

Instructions

1.Find the type, size, and color of LED bulb that you are looking for. As mentioned before, there are hundreds of different types out there and it may be difficult for you to find the exact one you are looking for. If that is the case, you may want to take your burned out bulb to your local hardware store to see if they can point you in right direction for a replacement.

2 .Remove the old bulb carefully so you don’t break it. Normally a screwdriver will be required at this point because LED lights are normally encased in something. So start by removing any encasing there is. Be sure to keep the screws that you removed however, you will need them when you put the case back on.

3 .Read the manual for your particular LED light. Many LED lights can simply be pulled out, but other have certain ways that they connect more securely. You will need to know what kind you are dealing with, don’t guess. Find the manual or instructions on your new bulb and remove following those directions.

4 .Replace the old bulb with the new LED light. The new bulb should go in just like the old one came out. You will want to test the light before you put the encasing back on to make sure everything works and the light is the same color.

5 .Replace the case that was over the LED lights and make sure the casing is secured tightly.

Tips & Warnings

There are hundreds of different shades and sizes of bulbs, so make sure you know exactly what you are looking for before you head to the store to buy a new one. There may be times where simply replacing the entire unit will be easier than trying to fix just one bulb.

Always remember to turn the light switch off before replacing the bulb.

How to Fit LED Lights

An LED light can replace the incandescent bulb inside a flashlight—providing a longer lasting light with less demand placed on the batteries. To fit a an LED light inside a flashlight, modify the bulb module that is inside to accommodate the bulb. A few tools most homes have on hand will be needed as will an LED light which can be acquired from a hobby shop or an electronics store.

Instructions

1.Unscrew the battery cap from the end of the flashlight and remove the batteries. Unscrew the incandescent bulb from inside the flashlight and remove it.

2 .Insert needle-nose pliers into the front of the flashlight. Grip an edge of the incandescent bulb assembly with the jaws of the pliers. Pull the assembly out and dispose of it in the trash.

3 .Unscrew the cover from the LED module assembly. Stand the LED module assembly on a table with the open end facing up.

4 .Grip a LED diode light by the base and hold it with the two pins that are attached to the bottom facing down. Insert the shorter of the two pins on the bottom of the LED into the center hole in the LED module assembly. Insert the other pin attached to the bottom of the LED diode light into the hole to the right of the center hole. Push down on the LED light to firmly seat it inside the LED module assembly.

5 .Heat up a soldering iron for 3 minutes. Solder an end of one of the two conductive pins to the center contact on the bottom of the LED module assembly. Solder an end of the other conductive pin to a corner of the contact that is circling the center contact. Let the solder cool for 2 minutes. Unplug the soldering iron.

6 .Place the LED module assembly, conductive pins first, into the flashlight. Push the assembly into the flashlight until you feel some resistance. Screw the reflector back on. Insert the batteries and screw the battery cap back on.

How to Use LED Lighting on a 12V System

LED lighting has become reliable and energy efficient. Today, there are multitudes of various types of LED lights to suit just about any kind of fixture or mounting needs imaginable. From lamps in your home to automobile taillights, television sets to flashlights, the humble LED is certainly gaining in popularity. Instructions

1.Purchase LED lamp modules designed strictly for use in a 12-Volt DC-only system from your local RV supply or solar energy supply store.

2 .Install your lamp modules in each light fixture, making sure that none of the modules exceeds the maximum amperage rating of any of your your light fixtures.

3 .Use only light hand pressure when installing your lights, turning each module until just hand tight. Once the modules are installed, test each one to ensure it operates properly when the lamp fixture is turned on..

Tips & Warnings

1.Most LED lighting modules designed for use in a regular household lamp will have a large ceramic square base. It is inside of such a base where AC to DC conversion circuitry is installed. However, LED modules designed for 12-Volt systems will have a thin base as they don’t contain AC to DC conversion circuitry. In addition, they will generally be marked “For 12-Volt Systems Only”, or something similar. By shopping for 12-Volt LED lights at solar power equipment retailers and RV shops, you lower your risk of purchasing the incorrect LED module.

2.Unplug each light fixture before installing your LED module for protection against electrocution during installation.

How to Wire LED Strips on a Transformer

Light-emitting diodes LED strips are a string of LED lights. LEDs are durable, consume little power and do not emit much heat. A basic transformer is a device that moves electricity from circuit to circuit. Wiring LEDs to a transformer should take less than a few minutes to complete. Transformers can range in size and function. Users should make sure the area where the LEDs will be attached will not get too hot.

Instructions

1.Turn off the transformer and disconnect power to it.

2 .Select a location on the transformer to wire the LED light strips to.

3 .Remove the adhesive backing on the LED light strips. If the light strips do not have adhesive backing, then apply glue to the back of the LED light strips.

4 .Affix the LED light strips to the transformer.

5 .Connect the LED light strips to an LED control module. The LED control module is a device that acts as a hub for many LED light strips. The module regulates power to the strips, as well.

6 .Connect the LED module to the transformer or attach it to another power source. The exact method for completing this step will vary greatly depending on the type of transformer and module. In a simple transformer, the user would wire a positive and negative wire to the LED control module, then connect those wires to the power terminals on the transformer. Make sure the rated power for the control module and transformer match.

Differences Between White & Green LEDs

Today’s high-brightness LEDs are powerful and flexible enough for exterior architectural illumination. They’re a far cry from the tiny red LEDs used as indicator lights on equipment in the 1960s and 1970s. They’re also far removed from the green LEDs that have appeared in traffic signals for 30 years. Differences in materials and fabrication methods lead to completely different performance parameters.

LED Light

In contrast to incandescent bulbs or fluorescent lights, LEDs create light from a semiconductor chip. The chip is made out of two slightly different materials layered on top of each other. Each material keeps its electrons at different energy levels, so when electrons get pushed from one side to the other, they gain energy, which they can show up as light. Because the wavelength of light is dependent on its energy, these chips are built with one specific energy difference, which means one specific wavelength.

Material

The energy difference in a semiconductor is called the bandgap. The bandgap of a material depends upon what it’s made of. Green LEDs of the 1970s and 1980s were made from gallium phosphide with some extra nitrogen atoms thrown in. Today, low power green LEDs are still made from gallium phosphide. The semiconductor at the heart of white LEDs is a combination of gallium indium nitride and gallium nitride, and its special feature is that it can put out lots of blue light. GaInN/GaN can also be used to make high-power green LEDs.

Structure

Green LEDs have a single chip with a single bandgap, therefore a single wavelength. All LEDs are single wavelength devices, so they have to use some sort of color mixing scheme to make white light. One design mixes the light from three different single color LEDs, usually red, green and blue. Another design has a layer of phosphor on top of an LED. A phosphor is a material that absorbs light at a short wavelength and emits light at a longer wavelength. In white LEDs, the short wavelength is from the semiconductor chip that emits blue light, and it joins with the yellows and reds from the phosphor to make white light.

Power

The semiconductor crystal is just a thin layer of atoms. When electrical current runs through that thin layer, if there are defects causing regions of high electrical resistivity, then the crystal will heat up. When the crystal heats, the resistivity gets even higher, which makes the crystal heat even more —- causing it to burn up. The early gallium phosphide diodes couldn’t handle more than about 20 milliamps of current before they burned up. As of 2011, high brightness diodes can take about 50 times as much current before they run into trouble. More current equals more light.

How to Recycle LEDs

Light-emitting-diode, or LED, bulbs may be more expensive than your ordinary light bulb, but the lifespan of an LED bulb is far longer. LED bulbs contain Mercury; therefore you should never throw away an LED bulb with your household trash. Proper disposal of LED bulbs is helpful to the environment and simple to do.

Instructions

1 .Take your old LED light bulbs to Home Depot or IKEA, and tell a customer service representative you would like to recycle them. Most home stores have recycling bins set up in the front of the store into which you may drop off old bulbs, batteries or plastic bags.

2 .Check with your city’s recycling center to see if you may place the bulbs in your city recycling bin. Most cities will send the LEDs to the appropriate location for proper recycling. It is best to place the bulbs in a separate bin from your other recyclables so that the recycling center can place them in the appropriate containers, ensuring they do not shatter.

3 .Mail your bulbs to a recycling program like Holiday LEDs. This company offers coupons for their website if you mail them your old bulbs for recycling. It sells themed lighting for such holidays as Christmas, Halloween or St. Patrick’s Day.

4 .Visit the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) website and locate a drop-off center near your home, or schedule a pickup for your bulbs.
